Artist's Comments

a butterfly still flies...

Critiques

:iconanjules:
I like that you've focused on the wing, since butterflies have the most amazing details on their wings, it's only right to want to show those details off. Whilst a lot of photographers would focus on the face, or the body, I like that you've moved the focus onto the most beautiful part of the butterfly. The depth of field, whilst in full view (on screen) does feel like a lot to take in, in a smaller view, the crispness of the photo along with the depth of field really makes the image ';pop'. The colours of the butterfly blend in beautifully (without disappearing) to the colours surrounding it. I like the placement, the lower portion of the image being in focus with the top half providing the background depth. I've tried to photograph butterflies before and they can be quite hard to capture at times - especially when they're intent on feeding, so a crisp, well placed photograph of one always makes me smile.

Vision: Macro Photography usually centers on the very small and very sharp, using as close to the whole frame as possible to surround the subject. The subject is super sharp, but there little contrast between the subject and background to warrant showing so much of it.

Originality: Its hard to comment on the originality of a simple butterfly, but pushing the subject to one side of your frame, simply is unoriginal.

Technique: The focus on the butterfly is nice, but the left wing, which is closest to us is caught in the depth of field, making the subject appear almost flat, as the closest point is what draws my eye to the frame. Also, this leaves the pine needles directly below it in the same sharp portion of your focal point, which my eyes are drawn to every time I look at this frame.

Impact: I feel that there would have been another way around shooting this frame, as butterflies are known not to be skittish for the most part. Perhaps just taking it in landscape format would have pulled me in the other direction, or maybe even a simple square crop, but as it is the elements I talked about above need to be addressed.

Beautiful... right down to the texture on the wings and focus past the foreground edge of the front wing.

This is not one of the strongest images you have posted, you have done much much better.

Horribly intrusive watermarks are tacky. If you're concerned about people stealing your photos, don't post them on the internet.
